Catalyst Production Waste

LCR aims to offer commercially competitive recycling options with an emphasis on environmentally sound management including assistance with notification procedures where necessary, including a range of catalyst production waste related services. We are partnered with fully licenced recycling facilities in Europe and the Far East.

Turn waste into valuable resources

LCR provides commercially competitive recycling options for catalysts production waste. We offer a comprehensive suite of services that can help you manage and reuse your byproducts responsibly to create additional value.

Catalyst production waste refers to the by-products or residues generated during the manufacturing and usage of catalysts. Catalysts are substances that speed up chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. They are widely used in various industries, including petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. The waste generated can vary significantly based on the type of catalyst and its application, including spent catalysts, catalyst supports, and other chemical residues.

Types of Catalyst Production Waste:

  1. Spent Catalysts: These are catalysts that have lost their activity over time due to poisoning, fouling, or sintering. Spent catalysts may contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, or rhodium, especially those used in petrochemical refineries or automotive catalytic converters.
  2. Catalyst Supports and Carriers: Materials like alumina, silica, zeolites, or activated carbon that provide a surface for the active phase of the catalyst. These supports can become contaminated with process residues.
  3. Chemical Residues: Substances that are left over from the catalyst preparation process, including solvents, metal salts, and other chemicals.

Uses for Catalyst Production Waste:

  1. Metal Recovery: Many spent catalysts contain precious metals that can be recovered and reused. This is particularly common with automotive catalysts and petrochemical catalysts.
  2. Energy Recovery: Some catalyst wastes, especially those with high organic content, can be used as a fuel source in cement kilns or power plants.
  3. Reuse in Other Applications: Depending on the composition, some spent catalysts can be regenerated or used as raw materials in other industries. For example, alumina-based supports can be used in the manufacture of refractory materials.
  4. Environmental Remediation: Certain catalyst wastes can be used in environmental applications, such as using spent catalysts for the adsorption of pollutants from water or air.
  5. Research and Development: Researchers are continually exploring new ways to repurpose catalyst production waste into valuable products, such as using them in the synthesis of new catalysts, materials science, and nanotechnology applications.

The management and recycling of catalyst production waste are subject to environmental regulations and require careful handling due to the potential presence of toxic substances. Efficient recycling and reuse of these materials not only help in minimizing environmental impact but also in recovering valuable resources, contributing to the sustainability of the catalyst industry.

Saving time and money

Our tailor-made recycling solutions reduce the cost and complexity of waste management, saving you valuable time and money. We are committed to providing the most effective, cost-effective and efficient solutions for your needs.

Creating new value out of waste

Our recycling process enables you to convert your production waste into valuable resources that can be used again, creating new value from what was previously considered ‘waste’. Our services are designed to provide maximum return on your investment.

Reliable, safe and sustainable

We take pride in our commitment to sustainability, safety and reliability in every aspect of our operations. We ensure that all our processes adhere to applicable regulations and industry best practices, so you can trust us with the most critical tasks.

The spent catalysts are recycled and used to produce high-quality metal salts for final applications including new catalyst manufacture, pigments and CO2 removal processes.

LCR also handles many types and forms of other non-ferrous secondaries including, fines, slags, residues, sludges, ashes etc. containing: Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, V, W, Zn.

Informed advice

LCR’s services include advice on packaging and current environmental legislation, transportation according to the latest regulations, an arrangement of weighing and sampling, recycling at fully approved facilities and issuance of Certificates of Recycling/Consumption where required.

The absence of comprehensive recycling facilities capable of handling all types and forms of spent catalyst and other secondary raw materials makes it difficult for the generator to find the appropriate recycling outlet. In addition, environmental legislation and transport regulations can be complicated and often vary from country to country. It is a minefield for the uninitiated.

Spent Catalyst Disposal Services

Customised recycling solutions

We provide customised recycling solutions to the generators of spent catalysts arising from Oil Refining, Petrochemical, Syngas and Fertilizer Industries.

It is our aim to provide commercially competitive recycling options with an emphasis on environmentally sound management.

Although it is the obligation of the generators of the spent catalyst to classify the material, our knowledgeable and friendly staff can offer advice and assistance with regards to:

  • Packaging Requirements – Whether material should be shipped in bulk, UN/DOT approved drums, catalyst bins or super sacks.
  • Transport Regulations – Our staff are fully conversant with the latest transport regulations and regularly attend courses and updates covering the transport of dangerous goods by land (ADR), sea (IMDG) and air (IATA) as well as 49CFR for movements within the USA.
  • Applicable Environmental Regulations – We have years of experience in the transboundary movement of hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, hazardous and non-hazardous metals and concentrates.

A network of agents and associates around the globe together with long-term relationships with fully licenced, ISO9001 and ISO14001 certified recycling facilities, enable us to provide the most suitable, commercially competitive options for each generator.

Site visits / environmental audits are available where required.

Many of the recovered metals are returned to the industry in the form of high-purity raw materials thus closing the recycling loop.
