What is Ammonium Metavanadate?
Ammonium metavanadate is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula NH4VO3. It is composed of one ammonium ion (NH4+) and one metavanadate ion (VO3-). The compound is soluble in water and decomposes upon heating, releasing ammonia and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5).
Ammonium metavanadate can be synthesized through the reaction of vanadium pentoxide with ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide:
V2O5 + 2 NH3 → 2 NH4VO3
Alternatively, it can also be prepared by reacting sodium metavanadate with ammonium chloride:
NaVO3 + NH4Cl → NH4VO3 + NaCl
Properties of Ammonium Metavanadate
Ammonium metavanadate exhibits several interesting physical and chemical properties, which make it suitable for a wide range of applications. Some of these properties include:
- Appearance: White, crystalline solid
- Solubility: Soluble in water, forming a colourless solution
- Decomposition: Decomposes upon heating, releasing ammonia and vanadium pentoxide
- Chemical Stability: Stable under normal conditions, but may release toxic fumes upon decomposition
Applications of Ammonium Metavanadate
Electronics
Ammonium metavanadate is used in the electronics industry as a precursor for the preparation of vanadium oxide thin films. These films exhibit unique electronic properties that make them suitable for various applications, such as transparent conductive electrodes, energy storage devices, and gas sensors.
For example, a study published in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds reported the successful fabrication of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films using ammonium metavanadate as a precursor. The VO2 films were found to possess excellent thermochromic properties, making them promising materials for energy-saving smart windows.
Catalysis
Ammonium metavanadate is also utilized as a catalyst or catalyst precursor in various chemical reactions. Its most notable application is in the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfur trioxide (SO3), which is an essential step in the production of sulfuric acid. In this process, ammonium metavanadate is first converted to vanadium pentoxide, which then acts as an active catalyst.
Additionally, researchers have explored the use of ammonium metavanadate-supported catalysts for other oxidation reactions, such as the selective oxidation of alcohols and the removal of volatile organic compounds from industrial emissions.
Material Sciences
In the field of material sciences, ammonium metavanadate has been used as a precursor for the synthesis of various vanadium-based materials, such as vanadium oxides, vanadates, and vanadium-doped ceramics. These materials exhibit a wide range of properties, making them suitable for diverse applications, including energy storage, catalysis, and pigments.
For instance, a study published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A demonstrated the fabrication of vanadium-doped lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cathode materials using ammonium metavanadate as a vanadium source. The resulting materials exhibited improved electrochemical performance, highlighting their potential for use in lithium-ion batteries.
Global Services
London Chemicals & Resources Ltd (LCR) is an international distributor, stockist and supplier of industrial inorganic chemicals. We hold several agencies and serve a global customer base both directly and via a network of local agents. LCR is committed to providing efficient service and competitive pricing to all customers.
Raw materials are supplied for a wide range of applications including the battery, catalyst, ceramic, fertiliser, glass, plating, refinery, superalloy and other industries. Who Are We?
London Chemicals & Resources Ltd (LCR) operates globally, processing non-ferrous metal-containing secondaries and distributing a range of metal salts and alloys which, in many cases, are recycled from these secondaries.
We hold exclusive agencies from Full Yield Industry Co Limited based in Taiwan and AGR-CR based in Spain. LCR source more than 90% of the spent catalysts and other feedstocks processed at Full Yield and represent them exclusively for sales of vanadium, molybdenum and nickel chemicals.
We also represent a completely new processing plant; AGR-CR treating spent catalysts and other secondaries and scheduled to start commercial operations in Q1, 2020. LCR offers commercially competitive recycling options with an emphasis on environmentally sound management. Our experienced, friendly and knowledgeable staff are familiar with relevant legislation, transport procedures and documentation including trans-frontier notifications; REACH, SDSs and ADR. Quality, consistency and reliability are all important watchwords for LCR ensuring that our customers return again and again.
We are regularly purchasing and recycling secondaries containing cobalt, copper, molybdenum, nickel, tungsten, vanadium and zinc found typically in boiler ashes and slags, catalysts spent – unused or out of date, drosses, dusts, filter cakes, furnace dust, galvanic solution residues, grindings and grinding sludges, metallics, shavings, metal powders, picking solutions, plating sludges, production wastes, residues, skimmings, sludges, wastewater treatment residues.
